Acute pain develops rapidly, is initially severe or powerful, and acts as a body's early warning system for sickness or other threats.
It usually lasts from a few minutes to less than six months and is brought on by an injury, surgery, illness, trauma, or severe medical procedures. Whenever the underlying cause is treated or healed, acute pain typically goes away.
You shouldn't ignore your acute pain. If you are in pain because of a trauma, important surgery, or an illness that may call for harsher medication or more rigorous therapy, get medical attention.
Once acute pain subsides, you are able to resume your normal activities.
The International Association for the Study of Pain provides a range of materials, including factsheets, webinars, journal articles, and resources pertinent to persons with pain problems, to help you learn more about acute pain.
