Post subject:  Which Is Your Pain

A skinned knee, a tension headache, a bone fracture—pain is a common part of existence. But occasionally, chronic pain develops; this is a concern to discuss with your doctor. Acute vs. chronic pain was a topic that WebMD invited Eduardo Fraifeld, MD, president of the American Academy of Pain Medicine, to address.

How do you describe the distinction between acute and chronic pain to patients?
According to Fraifeld, acute pain is regular discomfort that alerts you to an injury. "Good pain is when you break your leg, when you whack your thumb with a hammer, when you burn yourself after putting your hand on a hot plate. It informs you that you are injured. Your body will respond instantly if you touch that hot dish, and you'll immediately pull your hand away.

Acute pain usually begins suddenly and ends quickly. The agony ends when the wound is healed. For instance, a broken leg would pain while it heals, but "as time goes on, it gets better and better," according to Fraifeld.

In cases of chronic pain, "the pain itself becomes a disease," according to Fraifeld. Chronic pain is felt after the damage has healed but before the anticipated time of healing has passed.
