In the teaching-by-doing approach, beginning readers create their own texts by dictating ideas for a particular story to their teacher. In forming these ideas, students draw on their own experiences at home and at school. The teacher writes the story ideas on the board or on large sheets of paper, making what are sometimes called experience sheets. Then the teacher reviews the experience sheet with the students, and asks them to read various sentences, or review with them the material they have learned, or teach them any new words that the sheet contains. More experienced students may also write and draw the same stories to make books for other students to read.

Some educators believe that the learning-by-doing approach may limit students' learning of different ideas and cultures. However, teachers quickly, in most cases, combine the teaching-by-doing approach with other approaches. Experts who favor the learning-by-doing approach believe it is effective, especially in terms of giving children a solid understanding of what reading is—the process of getting meaning from written words.
